Holmes Catering Equipment in administration

Holmes kitchenHolmes Catering Equipment was today facing up to an uncertain future after entering administration.

The York-based company called in insolvency practice Geoffrey Martin & Co on Thursday afternoon, with news of its plight beginning to filter through to the market on Friday.

Diane Hill from Geoffrey Martin’s Leeds office verified that she is handling the administration. “I can confirm that is correct, administrators were appointed [Thursday],” she said.

Hill said she was “really just fielding creditors’ calls” at the moment so was unable to give any further comment or clarify the staff situation.

At its peak, the firm is understood to have employed as many as 50 people and achieved sales of £10m a year.

Sources familiar with the situation say the company had seen good growth in recent years, particularly under the stewardship of Peter Winterton, who grew sales and profits and oversaw the extension of its manufacturing operations. However, he left the business at the start of 2013.

Catering Insight contacted Holmes Group on Friday afternoon and was told that Geoffrey Martin & Co was “the appointed administrator now, but we are trying in the interim to continue trading under their supervision”.

Holmes, which was established 25 years ago, design and installs catering schemes for commercial foodservice and retail customers. Its customers include the International Maritime Organisation, Tesco, Waitrose and even the Royal Household.

Its factory in York manufactures restaurant, cafeteria and production facilities. Output ranges from refrigerated displays to servery counters, food displays and shopfitting.
